In August of 2011, I excitedly posted here that Brandon Marshall, at that time the wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins, had announced at a press conference that he had finally been told the reason for the emotional troubles in his life -- he was diagnosed as suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder. He was relieved and excited about his future, as he discussed his treatment.
I was thrilled. Since the publication of my Boomerang Love book in 2005, I've been waiting for someone with a well-known name to step forward and admit suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder. I was waiting for the Betty Ford of this disorder, to begin educating the public.
I've been disappointed that Marshall hasn't gone much further in public education than his original press conference. Since he's in the sports news frequently, perhaps he hasn't had time to do that yet.
But then Mary Kennedy, wife of Robert Kennedy Jr., hanged herself in her barn last month.
Newsweek magazine covered it, with full details of her suffering with Borderine Personality Disorder behaviors and the sad predicament of her husband and children, trying to help her.
I realized today that the Borderline Personality Disorder spokesperson has arrived.
She didn't arrive in person, at a grand press conference. She arrived crawling in great emotional pain and despair, exhausted from the battle with a disorder she never got treatment for.
Mary Kennedy is a Poster Child for Untreated Borderline Personality Disorder.
